A Basement of Resilience

Hidden below Strada Franceză, the basement tells a story that shaped Romania’s history. In January 1859, it was here that early discussions of unity began, paving the way for Alexandru Ioan Cuza’s election on January 24 as the ruler of both Moldavia and Wallachia. These conversations marked a pivotal step toward the formation of modern Romania.

While the building above endured two devastating fires, the basement stood unscathed, preserving its original character. Its stone walls remain a tangible reminder of the resilience that carried it through tumultuous times, quietly holding on to the memory of its historic role.

Today, this space has been carefully preserved as part of the bar, where the past and present come together. The untouched features of the basement offer a direct connection to history, grounding the atmosphere of the bar in something timeless, while inviting guests to experience a place where the old and the new coexist naturally.
